Focus on cultural donations and sponsorships
Summer unlocked: Article #5
Included in today’s article are links to three now-unlocked articles regarding donations and sponsorships overall in Canada and specifically for the arts and culture.
The articles are:
Fewer charitable donors in Canada, but more money given (Also: Highlights from a national sponsorship study)
Donations in the arts, culture, and heritage (Plus: Fundraising challenges reported by cultural organizations)
Arts sponsorships in 2024 (Plus: 20-year trends)

Key findings
As always, I encourage you to follow the links for fuller details.
What did I find in this analysis?
Donations and sponsorships (overall)
Over time, there has been a steady decline in the number of donors. However, the value of donations has increased.
Sponsorship levels appear to have increased, based on findings from a relatively small survey with shifting respondent numbers and types.
Donations to the arts and culture
Individuals donated $157 million to arts and culture organizations in 2023, representing 1.2% of overall giving ($13.4 billion).
The arts and culture’s share of donations in 2023 (1.2%) is marginally lower than the share in 2018 (1.4%).
Arts sponsorships
The arts represent 6% of total sponsorship value in 2024, or roughly $154 million. (Oddly enough, this estimate is very close to Statistics Canada’s estimate of individual donations to the arts and culture in 2023: $157 million.)
Out of the nine different “property types” (i.e., types of organizations receiving sponsorships) in the report, the arts rank eighth.
The arts’ share of overall sponsorships is not growing. For the most part, it has remained relatively consistent over the past 11 years.

Fewer charitable donors in Canada, but more money given
For this week’s article, I’ve analyzed datasets and reports on donors, donations, and sponsorships in Canada – for all sectors, not just the arts. In coming weeks, I’ll examine what the data say about the arts.
Donations to the arts and culture in 2023
Last week, I examined high-level statistics on donations, donors, and sponsorships. In the article, I noted that there has been an increase in the value of charitable donations, despite a steady decline in the number of donors.
Arts sponsorships in 2024
Today, I examine findings on sponsorships for arts organizations. This follows my analysis two weeks ago of high-level statistics on donations, donors, and sponsorships, as well as my article last week on individual donations to the arts, culture, and heritage
